What is a Birth Doula?

The word “doula” has come to refer to “a person experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the birthing person and their family unit before, during, and just after childbirth”.

Who Needs a Birth Doula?

The person giving birth needs a doula to allow them to feel safe, connected and nurtured, as they move through the stages of labor and birth.

Birth partners need doulas to help them believe in the process, to develop confidence in their ability to support their partner, and to relax. Birth is not just a two-person job for just the birthing person and their partner. The hours can be long and emotionally trying. Supporting someone in labor can be very exhausting. The partner also needs nourishment, bathroom breaks, encouragement and even naps. The doula shares the role with the birth partner, so the birthing person can receive uninterrupted support throughout the labor and birth journey.

Nurses, midwives, and doctors need doulas because it is not their role to sit with the laboring person continuously. Doulas provide emotional and physical support so the healthcare team can focus on the medical needs of the birthing person and keep them and their baby safe.

Common Questions

  • I recommend hiring a doula as early as you can but it is really never too late to reach out. It's important for us to get to know each other and build a confident and comfortable relationship as knowing your birth vision. While birth does not always go according to your plan, a doula can help navigate the changes, seek additional information, and help you advocate for yourself in times of need.

  • As a birth doula I provide support in many different capacities which includes epidurals and cesareans. Birth support is not limited and I provide non-judgmental support and information regardless of your choices or things that may be out of your hands. A doula is on your side.

  • I have a great support system in my back-up doula team. I will make sure you feel confident in knowing you will be taken care of no matter what. When we meet, I will give you an overview of what back up support looks like and you'll have a chance to meet our backup if you'd like.

  • I will keep in touch with you and/or your partner or birth support person(s) as soon as labor begins. I will be in touch for updates and as soon as you feel ready you will let me know. We will discuss the progress of labor at our prenatal meetings so you can be confident when it is time to call me over. Sometimes that looks like support at home or meeting you at the birthing center or hospital. That is totally up to you.
