What is a Birth Doula?

The word “doula” has come to refer to “a person experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the birthing person and their family unit before, during, and just after childbirth”.

Who Needs a Birth Doula?

The person giving birth needs a doula to allow them to feel safe, connected and nurtured, as they move through the stages of labor and birth.

Birth partners need doulas to help them believe in the process, to develop confidence in their ability to support their partner, and to relax. Birth is not just a two-person job for just the birthing person and their partner. The hours can be long and emotionally trying. Supporting someone in labor can be very exhausting. The partner also needs nourishment, bathroom breaks, encouragement and even naps. The doula shares the role with the birth partner, so the birthing person can receive uninterrupted support throughout the labor and birth journey.

Nurses, midwives, and doctors need doulas because it is not their role to sit with the laboring person continuously. Doulas provide emotional and physical support so the healthcare team can focus on the medical needs of the birthing person and keep them and their baby safe.
